The Story of Madam C. J. Walker” Honored at African-American Museum

Three years ago, “Biographies On Stage” presented the inspiring story of Madam C. J. Walker, the first female African-American to become a self-made millionaire in the United States.

Recently, The African Atlantic Genealogical Society, The African American Museum, and Nassau County Town of Hempstead honored Sal St. George with an Honorary Certificate of Recognition for “an entertaining and educational work that encompasses and embraces the African American Experience in an honest and accurate manner.”

We are proud of the recognition and praise this particular program has received, as well as the countless letters of commendation.

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge those who have made the life of Madam C. J. Walker so memorable.

Foremost, Carolyn Brown, is the living embodiment of this historical icon, and repeatedly mesmerizes audiences with her insightful portrayal.

There is a multitude of actresses who have performed alongside Carolyn during the three-year life of this program. Each of these actresses, in their own inimitable way, has been touched by this incredible story, and subsequently touched our hearts as well: Christine Jordan, Robin McKinnon, Kim Crawford, Jayne Traver, and Amy Conner.

These gifted actresses have taken my words and created theatrical magic...and I thank them.

Lastly, my thanks must be proffered to Judy Gordon and Richard Martin of the Suffolk County Parks and Recreation Department. They demonstrated courage and trust in my creative abilities, in allowing this potentially contentious story to be produced and presented at Deepwells
