The effervescent Marilyn Monroe will dazzle and delight Faye Emerson’s guests as the glamorous star discusses her childhood, her career in movie roles such as “The Seven Year Itch,” “How to Marry a Millionaire” and “Gentlemen Prefer Blonds.” Set in 1959, Marilyn gives us a behind-the-scenes peak of her latest motion picture, “Some Like It Hot.”

Billie Holiday

This spring, the Gould home will be filled with the sultry tones of Billie Holiday. After honing her vocal skills listening to Bessie Smith and Louie Armstrong, Eleanora Fagan changed her name, moved from Baltimore to New York, and began performing with Count Basie and Artie Shaw. “Lady Day,” as she came to be known, wowed audiences and recorded hundreds of songs, mostly her signature ballads.
    Her talent allowed her to transcend the prejudices of her time. Settle in for tea as “Lady Day” arrives to visit with Mrs. Gould and her guests in the Gould Mansion, Georgian Court.

Students will meet the performers either in person or through real-time video conferencing and interact with historical characters.
     In July 1839 Africans being carried aboard La Amistad from Cuba were led by fellow captive Joseph Cinque in a revolt. There ensued a widely publicized court case about the ship and the legal status of the captives.

 

Running Scared, Running Free

The dramatic story of the Underground Railroad is vividly brought to life in the award winning stage presentation, Running Scared, Running Free.
  Three separate stories are intertwined in this suspense filled saga set in New York, circa 1850, the year the Fugitive Slave Act was imposed.
Meet Dorcas, a quick-witted runaway slave from South Carolina; Tempie, the ‘conductor’ of a Safe House on the Underground Railroad; and Tobias Brunt, a ruthless and unrelenting Bounty Hunter determined to capture Dorcas and return her to her plantation owner.

Nat King Cole


Nathaniel Adams Coles was born in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1919 and christened Nat “King” Cole by a Los Angeles club owner in 1937. He conquered the pop charts in the Fifties and early Sixties with timeless ballads like “Mona Lisa,” “Unforgettable,” and “Ramblin’ Rose.” He led the King Cole Trio from 1937 to 1955 and recorded the famous “Route 66” in 1946. 2008 marks the 40th anniversary of the death of Nat “King” Cole. His work as a musical pioneer is undeniable.

Porter was one of the most prolific contributors to the Great American Songbook and promises to be a delightful guest in the Gould home.
